Denim jeans are a staple in everyone's wardrobe. They are versatile, comfortable, and durable, making them a go-to for daily wear. However, jeans can show signs of wear and tear over time. So instead of throwing them away, why not upcycle them into something new and stylish? In this blog post, I'll show two ways to create trendy denim belts with pockets by upcycling your old jeans. You can wear this as a fashion accessory or functional fanny pack.

Simple belt tutorial
This belt is the fastest and easiest one to make. Cut out the pockets with a seam allowance at the top, and sew them to the detached waistband.
Here's an overview of the project
Materials
One pair of jeans
Tools
Sewing machine
Scissors
Thread
Time
15 minutes
Skill level
Beginner. If all you can do is sew a straight line, you can easily make this belt.
Step 1: Remove the belt tabs and waistband
Pick apart the belt tab stitches with a seam ripper.
Cut off the waistband along the bottom edge.
Step 2: Cut out the pockets
Cut out the pocket along the side and bottom edge. Next, cut out the top of the pocket 1/2" from the edge. This will serve as our seam allowance.
Step 3: Sew pockets to the waistband
With right sides together, align the top of the pocket to the top of the waistband. Then, sew along the top edge of the band.
Step 4: Tack the sides of the pockets to the waistband
Tack down the sides of the pocket to prevent the pockets from flopping around.
Let's admire this belt one more time . . .
On to the next belt.
Fringe belt tutorial
This dramatic belt has fringe on the front and back. I love the boho vibes this belt throws off. And the fringe sways beautifully.
The back is just as cool as the front.
Here's an overview of the project:
Step 1: Remove the belt tabs and waistband
Pick off the belt tabs with a seam ripper and cut off the waistband.
Step 2: Cut out the pockets
Cut along the sides of the pocket and include a 5" long panel of fabric on the bottom of the pocket. Include a 1/2" seam allowance at the top of the pocket.
Step 3: Cut fringe on the pockets
Cut 3/8" fringe on the bottom panel of the pockets
Step 4: Cut larger fringe panels
Cut 12" long panels from the legs. Mark a 1/2" seam allowance at the top of the panel. Cut 3/8" fringe up to the seam allowance. For my belt, I made two of these larger panels.
Step 5: Lay out the fringe and pockets
Lay out the fringe and pockets to match the length of your waistband. I overlapped the pockets with the fringe 2".
Step 6: Sew the waistband
Lay the waistband over the fringe seam allowance. Sew along the bottom edge of the band.
Let's take a close-up look at this belt, shall we?
